Sugar’s L Litter Update!

Mark, who has been filming all of the stages of Sugar’s journey as a breeder dog for Can Do Canines during the L litter and will continue filming the process of “puppy to assistance dog”, will be also adding some updates along the way of the puppies and what they are doing as they grow!

His assignments have taken him all over the world, and I consider it extremely fortunate that he has chosen to document the process of an assistance dog and that Sugar is part of the story!!!

He will be taking a variety of footage of the entire process which he did with Sugar during her pregnancy and after the puppies were born, and he sees it with the fresh eyes of someone who hasn’t witnessed this part of the assistance dog program! He will continue to film them along their journey and I can’t wait to see how they will change lives!

I think it’s fair to say that during his filming he also fell in love with these puppies! I’m thrilled, as this will add another fresh view of the process and gives followers the opportunity for first-hand reports of their progress!

Here is his update from yesterday: Enjoy!!!

Life of Sugar Update from Mark

January 13, 2017

We’ve known for some time that two puppies from Sugar’s L litter will be raised by the inmates at Stanley Correctional Institution in Stanley, Wisconsin.

As part of the filming project, I visited Stanley yesterday and met with the warden, Reed Richardson, his assistant, Lori Patrouille and Can Do Canine’s trainer, Dyan Larson.

I first have to say that in my many years as a cameraman for Dateline/NBC, I’ve filmed in a lot of correctional institutions. However, I’ve never been treated better anywhere than at Stanley. They have granted incredible access to tell the story of Sugar’s pups in prison and I know it’s going to be amazing! This is all thanks to Warden Richardson who was the driving force in getting Stanley to become a “dog prison”, one of only two in Wisconsin!

On my tour, I got to watch one of the weekly training sessions that Dyan leads. All 40 inmates of the Dog Unit are there, even if they don’t currently have a puppy of their own to train. As with all puppies trained at Stanley, the two yet to be chosen “L” pups will each be assigned to two inmates. I met both teams and they’re so excited to meet the “L”s and start the next phase of their journey. We don’t know the exact date when that will happen, but we’ll keep you posted.

The two inmates share a very small cell and the crate takes up easily 40% of the floor. However, as you can imagine, there are NO complaints! The pups in training will go to the inmate work areas, just like other puppy raisers take their dogs to work. At night, the cell doors are locked but if a puppy has to go to the bathroom, the inmate rings a buzzer and his door is unlocked remotely. The inmate and puppy then go to a secured area just outside the housing unit where the puppy does their business. I’ve always wondered how that works and now I know!

One of the sweetest things is the big bulletin board they have in the open area of the housing unit. Along with all the newsletters from Can Do and photos of the dogs they’re training, there was a big display of pictures that Holly took of Sugar and the pups when they were just days old. So, their excitement builds as the day gets closer to when they get to be introduced to their new additions at Stanley!

Day 41-Learning to Separate from Mom….

We’ve had a busy household with the holidays, and in typical puppy fashion the L litter has decided it was time for lots of new learning opportunities!

Today they started to get the opportunity to “free explore” the house and to get outside of their comfort zone.  It was so much fun to see how they tentatively approached the “unexplored” space tentatively and then when Sugar went with them how they became bold and brave and looked like they would tackle the world!

Some of their development milestones:

  • Sugar has been weaning them for a little over a week and she is now only in there twice a day other than playtime.  The puppies are NOT happy about this development and they are vocal in their displeasure!
  • Late last week they bumped up to three full meals of regular puppy food a day!  They originally were at one, then an afternoon meal was added and now the dinner meal has been added. 1/2 cup for each of them at each meal means 10 1/2 cups of food every day for them, along with 6 cups for Sugar means we are going thru over 16 cups of food a day! And that’s only for a litter of 7!!!!!! Yikes!
  • Their activity level has soared and they don’t do ANYTHING in slow motion anymore!  Trying to get shots of them with my camera is nearly impossible as I only catch a blur of them going by….
  • They love the visitors that come to see them!  They can’t get enough of playing with them (or chewing and biting on them……)
  • They are great at sleeping through the night now from 11:30 to 6:30 am and they are anxiously waiting at the gate when I come around the corner and as soon as they see me go by they start whining for their morning meal!
  • They are in the 10.4-12.8 pound range already and they are only 6 weeks old!  Some of their paws seem very big, so I’m guessing some of these boys are going to be some big labs!
  • Since they don’t nurse as much they are going through water like it’s going out of style~it seems like as soon as I fill the water bowl, it’s empty and I do it all over again…….although I think they spill just as much as they are drinking so that they can keep me doing laundry…… 🙂
  • They are getting a little feisty with Sugar and she is taking the time to let them know what is appropriate for a puppy and what is not. She does a perfect Canine “Settle” which is impressive- I’m still a little amazed at how much she tolerates before she gently corrects them.  I know when they get my toe in their sharp little puppy teeth I don’t feel like that……..

Naptime!

We are getting down to the final week that they are with us and there is so much more to do in only a short period of time~I’m finalizing my weekly plan so that I can try to fit everything in that I want to experience with them before they leave us. So, this is the week they continue with potty training, noise desensitization, learning about new environments, checking out the snow, and starting some regular light obedience training to try to get some initial training with sit, what a leash feels like, sit, settle, come and  a few more car rides, more cape training and onesies and the list goes on and on……

Let the good times roll!!!!!!

Day 37-It’s a Dog’s Life!

Today the puppies got some more enrichment added to their daily schedule, including a brief trip outside to touch their toes on the grass and they got to play in the snow which I brought in by shovel full to place in their wading pool.( That was AFTER my first attempt at bringing the snow in where I tripped and the snow went flying all over my front entry….)  At this point I’m convinced the neighbors think I am absolutely crazy as they watch me scoop up a shovels of snow and then proceed to carry it in the house…….

This is what it looks like when you try to bring in shovels of snow and you trip in the entrance coming in……..I think Sugar had to stifle a laugh under her breath watching me and my crazy ideas…….

imgp6392

Why am I NOT surprised that Mr. Red is the first to jump head first into the new environment without even thinking twice????? And Ms. White (black collar) quietly waits to see how everyone else reacts before making the decision as to whether she wants to participate…….

imgp6395

Yet one more experience that they weren’t afraid of!

imgp6397

I think Sugar is ready to sell me to the highest (or any) bidder because I keep bringing her puppies into things……Notice her frustration in the background???? 🙂

Sugar was not amused with my idea to bring the puppies outside for a brief 20 second encounter without her….her disgust/concern is evident on her face:)

Yellow immediately did a hound dog nose to the ground search…..tail up and ready to find the scent!

Purple was not interested in checking out the new environment:) Check out her stance and her tail tucked…..

The noses on these puppies seems to be much more intense than the puppies from the first litter.  I will be very curious to see if this trait continues on through puppy hood and how that sense will be utilized for the Can Do program or for the other organization. And of course it wouldn’t be a successful day if I didn’t TRY to find some way to dress the puppies up for pictures, so I bought some mini Santa hats, waited for their next nap time and then went to work…….

And as quickly as it started, another day is coming to a close-they are a day older, and I am still loving every minute of puppy antics!!!!! I won the puppy lottery, but the good news is that I am happy to share the wealth for visitors wishing to come and help socialize the pups:)

Day 36-Just Outside Our World-Discovery Awaits……

Today the puppies got the opportunity to realize that there is a bigger world out there waiting for them!

First came t-shirt time to continue getting them desensitized to wearing things such as capes.  This exercise will hopefully help them from being cape shy and they won’t worry so much about what is on their back thinking it’s just a normal part of everyday life. They woke me up at 5 am this morning, so I had PLENTY of time to get them “dressed” before my REAL day began!  The consequences of waking me up should be weighed very carefully……. 🙂

imgp6296

I set up a totally new play area in our kitchen and they got to explore everything that they hadn’t seen yet.  It was really interesting because when they first got in there they didn’t know what to do and they started whining to get out.  Even though you think you are providing all of these incredible sensory, auditory and various other experiences, I realized quickly that moving around the house is equally as important to give them some experience in plain old “new space”.  Everything they were accustomed to changed, their potty location, the items in the play area, the lighting even-and once again I realized I would love to be a researcher that got to observe puppies and do experiments on sensory exploration.  I may have to interview a researcher or two just for kicks:) So,out came the other x-pens (because it is too hard to move the main room ones that are set up perfectly), the transfer of toys, potty pads and some comfy areas for them to sleep-and into the kitchen they went!  Interestingly, Sugar didn’t seem too fond of the change either as she kept a close eye on them for a good chunk of time.

imgp6300

And before I knew it the kitchen takeover happened……

Then, later in the evening they were going to have some more video taken of them for the documentary so they got to explore the living room as well!  It’s been a BIG day for these pups of purpose!  They were adorable as usual and the pictures and video seemed to be perfect for the holiday season!  Once again, a new “play area” had to be set up and this is exactly why I have SO MANY x-pens, because it’s really important for these puppies to get to see that there is a world outside of their play area and it’s nothing to be afraid of!

And this is how my day progresses-busy, fun, emotional, happy days!  But every now and then recently the realization that these puppies are only with me for another two weeks begins to sink in and I try to grab EVERY moment I can and store it in my memory, refusing to let the future reality steal my happiness of today. Puppies live entirely in the present, so why should I be any different??????  And happy is the only emotion that can exist around these 7 miracles of magic!

First Day in Capes!

Day 33-Yips, Yelps and Cries for Help….

The time has come for the puppies to understand that they have teeth-and they know how to use them!!! They now go bounding across the play area at one of their siblings and go right for their weak spots of the ears, nose, toes or tail and chomp down with intent.  Out comes a yelp which gets me to come running to make sure no catastrophe has befallen the group, only to find out that they are actively involved in puppy play!  No matter how many times they do it, I fall for it each time and it’s yet another opportunity to drift back to when I was raising our girls and I would come running at any suggestion that pain was happening, assuming the role of protective mother and knowing full well that these are the situations that have to happen to let them learn.  And so I give the puppies a mini mom lecture on how to treat your siblings with kindness and I put them back down where they immediately run right back to what they were doing and start mauling each other with a force only a puppy knows:)

imgp6168imgp6169Today’s enrichment toy is a wobble board that I made this weekend and I was laughing at them for how curious they are with EVERY new item that comes into their play area! (I’m not sure what I would have gotten done if the weather was nice.  You know it’s a serious case of puppy fever when you don’t mind being stuck in the house still and you secretly are happy to hear about the cold weather so that you have no reason to get out and do all of the things that are accumulating on your to-do list…..) This wobble board will enforce confidence in the puppies even when their footing is unsure and the floor is “moving” underneath them.  This transfers over to many personality traits of the puppies and giving them confidence early on is so important so that they have the tools to deal with stressful situations in the future.  This doesn’t mean that they will never be unsure of a situation, sound or object; it just means that hopefully through this process it will build good problem solving skills and confidence so that when they do encounter something that they are unsure of that they recover quickly, they realize that they don’t have to panic and they are able to continue their work at hand. It has been amazing to me to continue to learn just how important a puppy’s first 8 weeks are in their future success as a well adjusted dog.

imgp6182imgp6181imgp6180imgp6179imgp6178Their socialization with other visitors has started and they seem to love the extra play time that they get with humans now!  They sleep for longer periods of time when they DO sleep, and they are now sleeping for 6 hours through the night!  You learn to appreciate a night of 6 hours worth of sleep so much more after 4 weeks of much less than that!  So, these puppies continue to be a gift by giving me opportunities to appreciate the smaller things in life-learning that being in an x-pen snuggling with puppies, having 7 beautiful puppies run to greet you at 5am in the morning, and watching the play of a litter of pups can light your day just as much as anything else you could possibly imagine!

Day 32-Bark! Who goes there?

Today the puppies are continuing to enjoy their constantly changing environment and we are trying to note the personalities of each one.  Green-the first one to actually howl….and I’m not sure why, but Red and Orange are pretty vocal in their wants! They are all developing into their own beautiful personalities!

Part of the desensitization is exposure to many different noises like I posted in a previous blog; so it was a little surprising to me as I that as I was playing holiday music all of a sudden it happened-Little Drummer Boy came on the speaker…….and the puppies started BARKING! I didn’t know what it was about the drum sound so I thought I would test their reaction a few hours later by playing the same song again.  Sure enough, the puppies for whatever reason began to bark. I was speechless for a moment because I felt like I had exposed this litter to EVERYTHING! But when I stopped to really think about it, there are so many things they haven’t yet been exposed to.  Because of this, I have now added “drum sounds” to the list of exposure items for this week!  The list keeps growing, and if I keep up at this pace I will never make it out of the box!!!!

imgp6102

Clamoring to get to Sugar once they heard her!

imgp6132

Happiness at reaching their Momma!

At 4 1/2 weeks they are chewing like crazy, biting my toes, and getting their beautifully new, sharp, teeth in my sweater. Dress up in onesies continues so that they are less likely to be sensitive to a cape on their back-they still aren’t completely comfortable in them, but they get better each day-and the laughs that it provides me while watching them is valuable in keeping my sanity!

And that’s how this volunteer work evolves; you think that you are going to be “babysitting” a litter of puppies, and then before you know it 4 weeks has gone by and you are completely in love and entrenched in the puppy world, and you have to remind yourself frequently that there is a world outside of your house!

Day 29-It’s a Balancing Act!

With the puppies activity and brain development growing every day, it’s time to start “ramping up” their environment.  So, Ken built a ramp and we introduced it to them in the evening!  This will give them added confidence in their steps, will challenge them in their problem solving skills and will create yet one more surface for them to get used to. In addition it gives them a nice, easy way to enter and exit the whelping box. They didn’t let the grass grow under their feet at all when checking it out-I barely got it into the area and placed it over the entry way of the whelping box and they were clamoring up one side and down the other wondering what the new addition was in their area!  It’s so much fun to see what they do every time we add something new to their play area.  We try to keep it interesting by rotating toys and changing up the space so they have something different and engaging to play with and they seem to love the variety!

imgp5988

Exploring their new ramp installation!

imgp5987

They had this figured out in a snap!

imgp5985

I didn’t realize this was the first time they were exposed to wood-they were fascinated!

imgp5986

Lining up for the trip into the box!

They are 4 weeks old now, so we will be increasing their space after tomorrow’s video shoot to include the front entry.  This will double their current space and give them even more room to explore! With that additional space, they will now become enveloped in the family happenings and get used to increased noises, activity, and a little bit more of “real life”.  They are also getting big enough that we are removing the “pig rails” in the whelping box (the frame around the inside so that they have a space to scoot under if Sugar were to accidentally lay on them)

At this point, if it were warmer, they would start going outside regularly for potty breaks, but unfortunately the weather isn’t going to allow that process so we will make it work with the potty pads instead!

It’s too cold for them to walk outside right now, but teaching them new environment adaptation means they get to go out for brief 30 second “jacket excursions” on the “warmer” days (Minnesota definition of warmer)!

And now the fun begins!  They are old enough to slowly introduce visitors into their lives!  They have made it through the critical stages in as close to a germ free environment as possible and now visitors will come to help socialize them so that they are well adjusted to many different people, handling, voices, and situations!  While it’s important to not have TOO many visitors to wear them out or expose them unnecessarily to anything that may make them sick, it’s a critical stage in their development. This is a serious concern not to be taken lightly with puppies that haven’t had their vaccinations yet.  Because of this visitors have guidelines about not exposing the puppies to external germs from dog parks, vets, pet stores and even their own dogs. They will also be introduced to our resident dog Maddie to meet other dogs:)

So, where are they currently in their development?  According to  Puppy Behavior and Development at Dogtime , these are some of the high points of their age:

The socialization stage: Three to twelve weeks

  • A puppy needs occasions to meet other pets and people during this stage.
  • By three to five weeks, play becomes important as a puppy becomes aware of his or her surroundings, companions (both people and dogs), and relationships.
  • The influence of the puppy’s littermates increases at four to six weeks as he or she learns more about being a dog.
  • From four to twelve weeks, a puppy’s interaction with people becomes more influential. With littermates, the puppy learns to play, develops social skills, learns the inhibited bite, explores his or her social boundaries and hierarchy, and improves physical coordination.
  • By five to seven weeks, a puppy needs positive human interaction as he or she develops curiosity and explores new experiences.

They have now sprouted their bottom row of teeth as well, and by day 45 they should have 28 teeth filling that tiny mouth of theirs! Ouch! soon my hands will have bite marks all over them from the sharp puppy teeth and I will look like I’ve been in a battle with someone and I lost……

Day 25-You Know You’re a Whelping Mom when…..

Today was a typical day in the whelping box and play area, with the second day of feeding food and increased playtime. I took quite a few pictures throughout the day – so, rather than be repetitive and boring I decided I would put some of the pictures in this blog post along with the things help you know you’re a whelping mom!

  • You wake up in the middle of the night thinking of ways to rearrange the x-pens throughout your house to give the puppies more play space…..
  • You happily sleep on a deflating air mattress for the first 3 weeks because you know that you won’t sleep anyways if you are further away from them than the whelping room(and you joyfully wake up in the middle of the night to stare at them in amazement, forgetting how tired you really are)….
  • You see a spider (which you are terrified of) but you are worried more about the spider getting to the puppies than you are of your own fear and you chase it down to get it out of their room….
  • Your “big shopping day” entails picking up potty pads, dog treats, and puppy toys and you don’t care(or maybe don’t even notice!)that you didn’t GO to a store that would be for you!
  • You spend time researching on the internet about puppy safety, quality ingredients of treats that keep the momma dog healthy, puppy development stages, brain games for puppies, and the best cleaning supplies to use with puppies….
  • Your hope for your evening is maybe getting JUST enough housework done so that you can design a new puppy toy, sew yet another puppy idea or come up with another photo op!
  • Even though crib bumpers are no longer allowed for human babies, you are thrilled that they are now basically free so you can put the bumper on the x-pens to keep the draft out of the puppy play area…
  • You put a baby monitor in your room so you can sleep better, knowing you will hear the puppies if they need you during the night…..(I’m pretty sure that Sugar is the only thing they ever “need” at this stage, but don’t burst my bubble!)
  • Your day is consumed with locating cute “props” for puppy pictures, and your house is filling with useless objects that you just KNOW will create a killer photo…..but because the puppy activity level is increasing on an incredible pace the odds of them sitting still long enough in ANY of the props is pretty low……
  • You refuse to go out without a puppy sitter-and you won’t accept just ANY puppy sitter. (But you stop JUST short of asking them for references….)
  • You change your style of music playing in your house to the type of music “that puppies would like”.  What type of music do puppies even like?????? Seriously?
  • You warm up their puppy food because it makes YOU feel better-“puppies can’t eat cold dog food” you hear the voice in your head telling you…..
  • You can’t imagine anything better than sitting on a damp floor pad, in your jogging pants, in a messy house-and just holding a puppy.

    Can you say MESSY?????

Day 23-There is No Place Like Home for the Holidays

After a nice mini vacation with my 3 sisters and my mom in Arizona, I have to admit it’s really nice to be back! While I was gone, my thoughts were never far from home 🙂 Something really interesting happened during the flight home that took me by surprise-I was planning on sleeping during the whole flight home as I had only gotten 3 hours of sleep last night, but once I sat in my seat between two nice, older gentleman it became apparent that sleep was not going to be in the cards for me! They both started talking to me and before long I mentioned having puppies at home and the conversation began.  I just HAD to pull out my phone then and show them adorable puppy pictures like the proud parent of a new baby!  Although I didn’t see what was happening, a crowd from the 3 rows surrounding us started to lean in to listen to what I was saying.  Then, the lady across the aisle began to ask questions about the program, volunteering, clients, how dogs are placed and much more.  Pretty soon I had an audience of 6-9 people and we were happily talking about Can Do Canines! They started asking for contact information and I started handing out the necessary info on post it notes!  It’s amazing what you can do with time, adorable puppy pics, and a captive audience 30,000 feet in the air!

Ken I think has a new appreciation for the tasks that need to be done on what seems like a constant basis; wondering if the puppies were gaining enough, wondering about a cough by one or two of them, wondering if they were nursing too often etc. and yet I think it also has given him the opportunity to understand on a different level exactly what it is that makes me enjoy these puppies so much! Yes, it is work, but WOW does it have rewards as well!

So, today I was able to see how incredibly fast these puppies are growing!  In 3 1/2 days, they got upper teeth, they are walking so much better, they are play fighting with each other and they seek out the attention of humans!  In only 3 days!!!

They also got to inherit some new territory so they can explore-I’ve expanded their space to now include the whole office which means that their favorite spot is of course under my office chair and that is making it nearly impossible for me to work on the computer.  I can’t say I mind as I instead lay on the floor playing and cuddling with them! However, tomorrow I need to rearrange the room once again as now there isn’t room for the reclining chair  and I will have to move the cleaning supplies out of the area as well. The other rooms in our house are starting to fill with the overflow……….with added space for them to explore, the addition of x-pens means my exercise program has officially started with leg lifts….

Tomorrow is a big day for them too!!! It will be their first day of mush food.  That’s typically a really messy day, so I’m prepping my washer and dryer for the tasks ahead!

sibling love 🙂

They also are clamoring out of the whelping box so it will be time for me to put in some type of a walking ramp that allows them easier access in and out of the box as well as giving them a learning lesson on uneven surfaces and gaining confidence with their footing on a variety of surfaces! They also will get the use of their puppy play gym beginning tomorrow and a new toy that I purchased for them-a kids slide!

It’s going to be busy, messy and FABULOUS!
